The Bear

For a very long time, I have had a unique connection to The Bear. Also, my oldest son's spirit name is Little Bear. Coincidence? His clan is Turtle, not Bear, which I also think is wild.
Years ago, when I was living in my son's family's community on a North Ontario island, a Black Bear paw was gifted to me in the strangest of ways. One of the claws pricked my finger, enough to draw blood, and I had a crazy dream the same night! I was a Bear! It was amazing.
Recently, a Great Black Bear spirit volunteered to help me during my last ordeal, the same ordeal with the shadow entity and I cannot seem to shake the connection. Ever since this incident, the thought of the Bear surfaces often. This spirit chose to help me, it insisted, even when another animal was meant to go in its place. I now feel a bond that I cannot explain.
I know the Bear is the "Keeper of the Stories" and a "Guardian of the Medicines." I know that when working within the scope of Shamanism, the Bear is often called upon for protection, aid, and even for sight. Though these things are all important, I do not feel my bond with the Great Bear has that purpose. I do not require its help at the moment, I do not want it to do anything for me or see anything for me. My appreciation for this Great Being is deeply felt, and I am merely just basking in that bond. So much so, I want to incorporate the Bear into my practice and bring it more directly into my life. The Great Bear should be honoured.
The Bear is also connected to Brigid, Daughter of the Dagda. In ancient Bear cults, Brigid was known as the Great Bear Mother. That is something I only recently found out. Coincidence?
